PROJECT SUMMARY

Currently, only a piece of paper is proof of testing negative or being fully vaccinated. There is no universally accepted verification method that lives virtually, securely, and always accessible.

By  designing a safe and secure COVID vaccine passport for safety-conscious users to access and use, we will help ease a lot of anxiety about going out and traveling after the pandemic.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

I collaborated with two other team members, Cyndei McKinney and Al Schmidt, to complete this project.

As more and more people are becoming vaccinated and life slowly returns to normal, many people are still wary about traveling or attending events. During our research, many interviewees voiced their concerns about COVID protocols and accessibility of information since the COVID guidelines and practices seemed to differ from country to country, state to state, and even city to city. They were also worried about providing proof of vaccination to attend events or enter businesses, especially since the COVID vaccination record card is just a piece of paper that could be easily lost or damaged.

We worked together on the user research, definition, ideation, and testing. I was elected to create the UI style guide and design the visuals and the high fidelity prototype. Having previous coding experience, I was also charged with our app's front-end development using HTML/CSS.

RESEARCH

For our research, we conducted five user interviews and gathered Google Survey data from 10 people. We also did a competitive analysis where we looked at other websites/apps similar to Vaccin8. Right now, there isn’t an app that provides information for both COVID testing and COVID vaccine information. It was either one or the other. So that was cool for us because we could find our reason for what could make us better.

We also wanted to find out how people felt about going out in public during our user interviews. Our users were pretty much on the same page as far as going out, wearing masks, and everyone needs to get the vaccine. When asked about medical and health type apps, most of our users were also skeptical about sharing personal information on the internet, fearing their identity being stolen or certain websites being hacked. This challenged us to figure out how we could ensure our users that our app would be safe and accessible for users.

USER INTERVIEW RESULTS

  • Users voice frustrations and fears about people not following COVID precautions & measures after the pandemic

  • Users were concerned with consistency in policy in different states and when traveling to different countries

  • Users wanted to know about COVID updates and measures more easily at different locations.

  • Users were concerned about identity being stolen and people hacking into apps/websites

DEFINITION

To understand the user and prioritize key features that would improve the user experience.

AFFINITY MAP

Once we completed our user survey and interview, we categorized and group our data into an Affinity Map. Most of our users were also concerned about sharing personal information on the internet. This  challenged us to figure out how we could ensure our app is safe for users to use and trust.

IDEATION

To generate ideas and solutions for the redesign

USER PERSONA

Using our Affinity Diagram, we created a user persona. Meet Kevin Smith, a software engineer from Portland. He's a family man, with a wife and two kids. He's doing what he feels is necessary to keep his family safe. His biggest goal is for things to calm down enough for him to go to a Mariners baseball game against the Yankees in New York. He just wants to get back to drinking beer with his buddies and watching baseball live.

FEATURE PRIORITIZATION MATRIX

Based on our 'I Like, I Wish & What If' Diagram, we gleaned what featured to prioritize in our app.

  • Add maps with places  that required proof of vaccination and maps of testing locations

  • Chat with doctors

  • News updates

  • Reminders

TESTING

To identify any usability problem, collect data, and determine user satisfaction with the product

We completed several usability tests. First, when we finished our Lo-Fi prototype, and a second time, when we completed the first iteration of our Hi-Fi prototype. With each trial, our user testing revealed a smooth flow in both low and high-fidelity prototypes. Our iterations were mainly to improve the breadcrumbs for onboarding and add security concerns reassurance.

FRONT END DEVELOPMENT

I coded four screens in HTML/CSS as part of the front-end development.

HI-FI WIREFRAMES

We chose a style guide reminiscent of hospital scrubs but muted and soft so that the app would feel inviting.

We also wanted to make the colors accessible and friendly for kids since CDC approved COVID vaccines for teens.

HI-FI PROTOTYPE

As the lead visual designer, I designed the high-fidelity prototype and went through two iterations before the final product.

The onboarding process and home screen layout were important to our team. We wanted our app to be accessible and intuitive.

PROTOTYPING

LO-FI PROTOTYPE

We worked independently to brainstorm how we would each incorporate our research findings. After creating our own Lo-Fi mockups featuring QR codes, doctor chats, news updates, relevant maps, and relevant medical reminders, we reconvened and discussed which direction would best address the problem. We combined different components from each of our designs to the final prototype.

CONCLUSION

NEXT STEPS

Looking to the future, we want Vaccin8 to be more than a COVID passport app but a universal medical app where users can store all their medical information for easy access when traveling, on the go, or in emergencies.

INTEGRATING INSURANCE INFO

Users will be able to add and utilize their insurance information into the app.

ADD MORE MEDICAL INFORMATION

Users will be able to add more medical information and easily share with healthcare providers

APPT/VACCINE REMINDER

App will alert users about upcoming doctor’s appointments and vaccinations.
